Pregnancy

Many couples around the world incur a risk of procreating a child that inherits their genetic disorders. This type of pregnancy can be a very dramatic and painful experience both for the parents and the child. Therefore many of these parents are constantly on the lookout for either an adoption or a medical procedure that can alleviate the worry and provide them with a healthy child. Such was the goal of a recent procedure that gave birth to the world’s second three parent baby.

Although this procedure was tested on genetic disorder-free parents who were simply infertile, it does give hope to those suffering from mitochondrial disease as well as those whose infertility issues made it impossible for them to conceive using In Vitro Fertilization. Such is the case of the parents who were the center of this study. The resulting child carried the DNA identity of both parents alongside a small amount of DNA from an outsider egg donor.

The procedure was carried out by a team of doctors in Kiev, Ukraine. It was accomplished by fertilizing the mother’s egg with the father’s sperm then transferring the resulting genes into an egg donated by a second woman. The procedure resulted in the birth of a healthy baby girl on January 5th of this year.

This achievement is set to give hope to millions of parents who have mitochondrial disease. It is aimed at helping women carrying that risk to have a healthy child by combining their mitochondria with a healthy one. The science behind this prowess is still nowadays the subject of a lot of controversy mainly surrounding the potential feeling of a child that carries the DNA of three people. Regardless, the procedure was announced as a successful one by the Kiev team which still acknowledges it as an experimental one, needing a lot more research and evaluation before being considered a viable solution to the problem of mitochondrial disease transfer.
